I wish you luck on that! You're absolutely right. If you don't go through it, you'll never know what to look out for. And you're right, you can turn every negative experience into a valuable learning experience. The type of experience that you can bring to someone else's table and say "these things are the good things I've learned and can now excel in" and "you MUST avoid these things or people!"

You're right. Putting yourself down is the quickest way to ensure you don't get what you deserve. No one determines your value but you. How the hell do you think Paris Hilton is so friggin' popular?? What you say sounds like a perfectly good set of ground rules for anyone seeking to make a name for themselves in any of the creative arts - not only screenwriting. I would applaud everything you say.

But as for working with assholes ... hmm, I too have fallen into that trap and that's the problem, isn't it; recognising the pitfalls before you tumble blindly into them. You can only ever learn to recognise the smell of asshole if you have been there and done (smelt) that.

Your three years of bum-sniffing were not a waste of time or effort if you look at it this way - now you occupy a better vantage point and can see them coming.

Also, now you know you have the ability to make things happen YOURSELF, without ever feeling that you need to be riding on the back of someone else's household name. That's actually an astonishing and valuable thing to have - self confidence. I'm working on a twelve-step programme to quit putting myself down, even as I write.

I found you again by accident. I'm glad to see your blog back in a limited fashion. In catching up I ran across your entry on the Holocaust. Ironic as I was just watching a segment on The Today show detailing the efforts of a French priest to chronicle Jewish deaths in the Ukraine. It's entirely possible that we will never know the true number of deaths in Europe and Asia that stem from WWII.
